January 24, 1997: We sent the requested funding information to Japan, five and a half pounds worth. I really doubt that they will ask for more information, at this point I think we are either in or out. Now it's just a matter of waiting for their decision. We know this will take some time as the Japanese are very deliberate in their decision making. In this particular case it's going to be longer as the foundation is conducting a major reorganization of staff, and policies. January 28, 1997: Our funding was due to run out the first of March but we received word that the museum has found enough money to fund us to June. Getting these small grants is like getting a transfusion, but we are still living on the edge. We have finalized Professor Ohtsuka's itinerary, he will be here from the 23rd of February to March 10. The trip will no doubt be frantic. We have to view and select material from over 3,000 objects in four museums hundreds of miles apart. This trip is extremely important as we have to start working on the catalogue, and of course, we need to photograph each piece selected and write the captions, plus writing the catalogue text. While I will do some of the writing, Ainu and Northwest Coast Indian Art is my specialty, other specialty areas will be written by experts in subjects such as Ainu whaling, mythology, shamanism, etc., etc. During our last trip to Japan, we were able to get commitments from authors in many areas of expertise. While I sometimes think things are going slow, things are moving, and there's no doubt, as we get closer to opening, the "stuff" that makes up an exhibition will consume me even more than now, and my life will be nothing but a blur. The exhibition is taking on a life of its own. |
