About Arctic Studies Center - Alaska
The Smithsonian Institution has a long history with Alaska. Before the region was purchased
from Russia in the mid 19th century, scientists were sent to explore its environment and
people. In 1993, the Arctic Studies Center opened an office in the Anchorage Museum of
History and Art.
Working with Native people, scholars and museum associates, Dr. Aron Crowell directs the
Center's Alaskan office where he is responsible for a broad range of collaborative research.
Crowell is currently the principal investigator for a large, interdisciplinary study of prehistoric
maritime adaptations, population growth, and environmental change sponsored by the
National Park Service for the Gulf of Alaska.
