REMARKS:
Some Alutiiq masks incorporated elaborate painted designs, feathers, three-quarter hoop extensions and wooden appendages. Judging from the perforations found on its border, this mask collected by Fisher from the Alaska Peninsula may have contained a hoop extension at one time. It is similar in design to miniature masks found in an archaeological site at Karluk, Kodiak Island, dating to 500 years before the present time. Scholars believe its beak-like mouth is representative of the bird imagery found on precontact and ethnographic Alutiiq materials.
