REMARKS:
In 1881, Fisher wrote to Spencer Baird, the Secretary of the Smithsonian, that he would obtain "a full set of bead ornaments worn by Ugashak belles" of the Alaska Peninsula which consisted of a beaded headdress, a beaded collar worn around the neck, a beaded collar worn over the shoulders, a pair of bracelets, a pair of anklets, a pair of earrings worn in the lobe of the ear, three pairs of earrings worn in holes pierced one above the other on the outside edge of the ears, and a belt. Not all of these objects were acquired by Fisher, for they were not included in his listing of the 1882 accession, and some that were are now missing. These earrings are part of the set that remains, along with a headdress, belt (see 72470), choker, and necklace (see 72467).
